Black eyeliner is like your favourite LBD – reliable, classic, and you can tailor the look to suit your personality. Whether you prefer liquid, pencil or gel, black eyeliner instantly adds definition and character to the eyes – but it’s also a look that can get real old, real fast.

In honour of the arrival of winter, we’ve chosen colourful eyeliners that will inject a much needed hit of colour into this cold, grey season. Colourful eyeliner can really make your eyes pop and an emerald green or bright blue liner will instantly update your look. You can apply it to the lower lash line for a pop of colour or as a full winged liner for an edgy take on the classic look. Don’t be afraid to layer colour, and trust us if people are staring at you it’s a good thing.

If you prefer to play is safe beauty wise, use your coloured liner in conjunction with your black one. Take a soft black pencil and line the top lash-line from the inner-eye to outer corner, and smudge. You really want a blended line. It will help make the blending of the coloured liner go faster and much easier and make sure you use a creamy, shimmery liner. Using a moistened, small, tight brush or a pencil, dot and dash your colour over the black smudged line. Next, feather and smudge the coloured shadow or pencil up and over the already-smudged black liner.

How to instantly make your eyes look bigger

Beauty editor’s tip: Apply a neutral brown shadow to the lid, followed by a royal-blue liner along the lower lash line. Add a coat of volumizing mascara for definition.
