You know what ruins a good manicure? Chewed-up nails and cuticles. Trust me, I speak from experience. I started biting my nails as a child and, after I stopped as a teenager, I moved on to the skin around the nails. I don’t even have cuticles any more. Slowly but surely I am gaining control over this bad habit (it only took 20 years), and here are some tips that helped me. Maybe they will help you too. Fingers crossed!

Keep your fingers busy

One effective method to give your nails a break is called object manipulation. This is when you divert your attention to something else when the urge to bite strikes. One thing I like to do when I can feel myself start to nibble is to grab some cuticle cream and work that into my fingers instead. Other good diversions? Fidget spinners. And you thought you left that fad in 2017!

Lotion ’em up

As I mentioned, I like to use cuticle cream, my personal favourite being Lemony Flutter Cuticle Butter from Lush. Another product many biters swear by is good ol’ petroleum jelly. This is because the slimy, slippery texture feels weird in your mouth, which reminds you that you are on a mission to stop biting. It also keeps your nail bed smooth and free from tempting dry skin.

Keep a nail file on you

Many people bite their nails in an attempt to even them out or if the sides have a snag. This is why it’s a good idea to keep a nail file on you. This way you can take some time out to tend to your nails and make sure they are on point before a problem arises. You’re much less likely to bite an uneven edge if you are armed with the appropriate tools.

Put a bad taste in your mouth

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and if you just can’t stop, it might be time to take things up a notch. There are top coats available that you paint on to your nails and have a bitter taste, which helps to discourage biting. Because gross! We recommend Essence Anti Nail Bite Nail Polish & Top Coat and Marvala Stop Treatment.

Add some art

Another great way to prevent yourself from biting is by making your nails look SO pretty that you don’t want to ruin them. Simple yet effective. Pop in to your nearest nail salon for a gel manicure or even get some fun nail art. This is a great incentive to keep your nails looking fabulous. Good luck!
