Unless you are a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race, drag-queen-level drama probably isn’t your go-to beauty look. However, whether they’re going over the top or not, drag queens are super knowledgable about cosmetics and are true experts when it comes to applying make-up, making it last and getting it off. We can learn a lot from them. Here are some top tips from the world of drag that will help you to look ‘sickening, daaarling!’
1. Lighten your lips
Is your natural lip colour quite bright? This can affect how the lipstick you put over it turns out. A good way to combat this is to eliminate your own lip colour by applying a matte longwear shade in a neutral tone underneath the colour you want to wear, so that you can let your statement lippie live up to its true potential.
2. Perfect with powder
Many women are too scared to use setting powder because it can, if applied too liberally, look cakey and even be ageing. True story. If you learn how to use it properly though, powder can be your best friend because it helps to set make-up so that it doesn’t crease and saves you from looking greasy.
3. Prime time
One of the most important products in your make-up bag is primer. That’s right – using this stuff means that you can go easier on the foundation because the primer will fill in any fine lines and enlarged pores, making your face a flawless canvas on which to ‘werk’.
4. Horses for courses
There is a time and a place for everything. A full face of bright, heavy make-up might go down a treat at the club but would probably look just a tad out of place at a job in a corporate environment. Just something to bear in mind when you are getting ready to go all out.
5. Lighten up
Most of us would love to have our eyes look bigger and stand out more, and there is a trick that drag queens swear by to create this illusion. Line your waterline using white eyeliner instead of your standard darker colours. Adding a few single false lashes to the bottom lids can also take it up another notch.
6. Get glittery
Glittery make-up is fun, but figuring out how to apply it flawlessly can be tricky. This is something that drag queens have down. Their secret? Making a solution out of a mixture of lash glue and water. This is safe to be used on skin, will adhere until you cleanse it off, and will provide you with an even, shimmery finish.
7. Take it off
At the end of the day (or night), it’s important to take off all your make-up to keep your skin in good condition. But there’s no need to spend piles of money on specially designed removers – coconut oil will get rid of everything, from glitter to fake lashes. It also means that there is one less chemical going on to your face, and it hydrates your skin as you clean it. Gorgeous!
