We all love spending the summer holidays out in the sunshine, but hair breakage due to excessive sun exposure isn’t fun. Below are some essential pre- and post-sun tips to keep your tresses protected in the summer months.

Pre-Sun Haircare

Before hitting the beach, give your hair a quick rinse and apply a leave-in conditioner like Long & Lasting Leave-in Conditioner, which contains proteins and olive oil to actively lock in moisture to help protect your hair from damage.

A rich conditioning mask is also a good idea. The Two Oceans’ Moroccan Argan Oil Intense Conditioning Mask is naturally rich in antioxidants and vitamins A, C, E and F, which work to nourish and strengthen your hair before and after sun exposure.

Although you would never put oil on your face or body before stepping out into the sun, the same doesn’t apply to your hair.  Olive oil, caster oil and Moroccan argan oil are known to hydrate your hair while creating a protective barrier from the sun.  Step into the kitchen and measure out a teaspoon of olive oil or try the OGX Argan Oil of Morocco Extra Penetrating Oil.

Some hairsprays contain UV-protection ingredients. Vitamins A, C and E all offer protection against free radicals that can harm your hair. Hairspray coat the hair cuticle, creating an additional protective layer of protection from the sun.  The L’Oréal Elnett Heat Protect Styling Spray‘s advanced triple-action formula envelops the hair fibre, creating an optimally smooth hair surface and protecting hair from frizz and humidity.

Post-Sun Haircare

After a day of sun, sea and sand, your hair requires a nourishing and moisturising shampoo and and conditioning session.

We love Earth Sap Pomegranate and Soy Shampoo, which contains coconut oils, pomegranate oils and soy protein to moisturise dry, coarse hair.  Also try Marc Anthony Nourishing Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo and Conditioner, The Hair Design Studio London Just Argan Ultra Nourishing Conditioner, or OGX Repairing Awapuhi Ginger Conditioner, which smells ah-mazing.

If you are experiencing extra dryness, a deep conditioning hair treatment once or twice a week will also do your hair some post-sun good.  Repair and rejuvenate your hair back to health with the Argan Oil Hair Treatment, which can be found in select Dischem stores nationwide.

Whether if it’s before, during or after, always keep in mind that the sun is not your skin or hair’s friend, so the less interaction the have, the happier you will be in the long run.
