It’s all about fun in the sun while on a summer holiday, but suffering from painful sunburn and potential hair loss due to excessive sun exposure doesn’t sound like much fun. Below are some essential pre- and post-sun tips to apply in your skincare and haircare routine.

Pre-sun skincare

Sunscreen… sunscreen… and more sunscreen. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen which contains a minimum of SPF30 to protect your skin from the harmful cancer-causing UVB rays. A light water-resistant one will allow you to take a dip in the pool or ocean, and not have you emerge looking like a white, pasty ghost. It is recommended that you reapply your sunscreen every two to three hours throughout the day.

TRY: RVB SkinLab Diego Dalla Palma Protective Sun Cream SPF30Tropitone Move It SPF30 Sunscreen Invisi Spray or Optiphi Solar-Shield SPF50 Sunscreen.

We know this one is a bit difficult to do while on holiday, but try to limit the amount of time you spend in the sun. Stay in the shade as much as possible to reduce sun exposure.  Wear a large sun hat and protect exposed areas like your shoulders and back with a stylish shirt or cover-up.

Take care of your skin post ‘fun-in-the-sun’ by first cleansing away the dirt, sweat and impurities collected throughout the day. Then moisturise your body with a hydrating cream which will help restore your skin’s moisture levels by adding extra-long-lasting hydration. Try Pure Beginnings Hydrating Body Lotion, Savannah Shea Body Lotion, Optiphi Body Curve Evergreen Body Lotion or Afriderm Body Butter.

Keeping a small hand cream like MatsiMela Litchi & Rose Hand Cream in your beach bag is a handy way to maintain soft, moisturised hands throughout the day and night.

If you do get burnt, apply a cooling after-sun gel or moisturiser. We always reach for the Theravine Aftersun Rescue Gel which contains Grape Stem Cells and Aloe Vera to soothe, calm and reduce irritation of the skin after UV sunlight exposure.

Whether if it’s before, during or after, always keep in mind that the sun is not your skin or hair’s friend, so the less interaction they have the happier you will be in the long run. Get our tips for pre- and post-sun hair care over here.
