One of the most important steps in any skincare routine is cleansing. And these days, there are plenty of options to choose from, other than regular H2O, ranging from micellar water to cleansing balms. But this hack – which is popular in Japan and South Korea – has made its way to us and, while it might sound weird, actually makes a lot of sense. Cleansing your face using sparkling water is tingly, yet effective. Here’s why:

My face is fizzing

Sure, the feeling of sparkling water on your face might be strange, but the benefits certainly aren’t. In fact, many dermatologists believe that it works. This is because regular ol’ tap water has a pH of around 7, while the carbonated variety is around 5.5, which happens to be the same amount as our skin. This means that it is better for the outermost layer of our skin, which can become inflamed and irritated by normal water. Need more reasons? Sparkling water can also stimulate blood supply to your skin for a brighter complexion, and can get right into those pores to remove any build-up. Better skin? We’re in!

But how do you use it?

Just as you would when you are rinsing from the tap, sparkling water can be used to wash away your facial cleanser. Another great hack is to dunk your face into a bowl of it and holding out for as long as you can. The sensation will also help you to feel wide awake, invigorated and ready to tackle the day.

And rather than buying a monster supply of fizzy water to use during your daily regimen, invest in a home carbonation machine to make things more economical (and less plastic-waste intensive). It’s a small price to pay for skin that sparkles.
