If you have your finger on the pulse of what’s happening in the beauty industry, chances are you’ve seen this fella popping up on your news feed. The konjac sponge originates in Korea (are you surprised) and is incredibly popular. This is because, according to devotees, it has the magical ability to clear up and brighten skin.

Konjac sponges are similar to loofahs but are gentle enough to use on your face. Rather than coming from the sea like regular sponges, they are made from the super-absorbent roots of the konjac plant. What’s so great about them is that, unlike other harsh exfoliators, they are not abrasive, which means that they can be used on all skin types, even sensitive and eczema- and rosacea-prone skin. Their other special skills include removing build-up and dead skin and unclogging pores. Those who have used these sponges for over a period of time have reported having smoother, more radiant skin since they started on their konjac journey.
How do you use them?
Because they are made from hard plant fibres, they need to be soaked in water for five to ten minutes before use so that it can soften up. You then squeeze out the excess water, put your facial cleanser on it, wet your face and then start scrubbing your face, using circular motions. After you are squeaky clean, rinse out the sponge and allow to air dry. Easy!
Are they available in SA?
Good news – they are! And they come in a variety of different colours which denotes the ingredients and which type of skin they are best suited to. The purple one contains lavender which is ideal for sensitive skin, the black one has charcoal in it, which helps to clear up oily skin, and the green one is infused with green tea which soothes dry skin. This means that you can pick the sponge that’s right for you and will make your skin better and brighter. And who doesn’t want that.
