The 11th South African Film And Television Awards (SAFTAs) is already underway at Sun City: some of the production awards and the smaller category awards were announced last night.
So far Jessica Nkosi wins best dressed with this gorgeous look:
And reaction-of-the-night goes to Tshililo Waha Muzila who accepted the award for Best Youth Production for 100% Youth:
SAFTAs is essentially the South African Oscars, and while it’s hard to imagine a more dramatic ceremony than the one we’ve just had, we’re eagerly anticipating watching the final awards this Saturday evening. In the meantime we’re keeping an eye on Twitter, and are feeling tickled by these fun SAFTAs facts:
Fun facts about the SAFTAs that made us go ‘wow’
- This year there were more than 441 submissions from production houses across the country. From these 258 nominations were selected (if you’re a seriously dedicated TV fan, here’s the full list)
- They will compete for awards in 89 categories across feature films, animation film, special public vote, and most popular TV presenter.
- This year there are two new categories: Micro Budget Film and Best New Presenter.
- In spite of all the heat on the SABC, programmes made by the national broadcaster managed to bag an impressive 54 nominations!
The awards will be hosted by Expresso host Katlego Maboe (his second year in the role), and actress and TV host Thando Thabete. Their announcement posts are old-style movie glamour to the max – we can’t get enough of this classic look and feel.
FYI: this year you have a say.
For the first time, the public have been invited to participate in the judging process via vote for Best Soapie and Best TV Presenter. The soapie stans are already texting until their thumbs won’t work, so get your vote in now if you’re one of them.
