I grew up on ’90s R&B. I fell in love for the first time listening to Joe Thomas’s ‘I believe In You’. I had my first heartbreak listening to Brandy. So imagine my delight when it was announced that these two R&B legends would be the international headliners at the Macufe Festival in Bloemfontein this past weekend. They performed alongside many incredible South African and African artists including Kelly Khumalo, Tiwa Savage, Lady Zamar and Amanda Black.

Brandy’s performance of ‘Have You Ever’ stole my heart. It was surreal. And I lost my shit when she did ‘The Boy Is Mine’. In very related news, Joe sang his classic ‘I Wanna Know’ – and, guys, he looked straight at me, leaned over the stage and took my hand! Okay yes, he also took a lot of other people’s hands when he did ‘Ride With You’. BUT STILL!   😍😍😍

More importantly, later that evening, the Khumalo sisters, Kelly and Zandie, shared a backstage moment with Brandy, who praised their singing and snapped a picture with the sisters (as seen on Zandie’s Instagram). When Brandy asked who was just on stage singing, Zandie Khumalo replied, ‘Us!’ and a serious diva moment ensued with:

‘You guys sound amazing!’ – Brandy

‘You’re amazing!’ – Kelly Khumalo

‘You guys were amazing.’ – Brandy

In case you were wondering, Joe’s hands are very soft. Dreams do come true.
