Sometimes, styling a skirt can be tricky. Here are 5 contemporary ways to wear that skirt lurking around in the back of your cupboard.

1. The new normal

I like to refer to this approach to styling a skirt as the ‘new normal’ because street stylers have been pairing skirts with unexpected accessories and pieces [for a while now]. As seen in the picture below, infusing office wear and daytime clothing with your ‘boring’ skirt is one smart way of achieving a bold, powerful look. What is flattering about Shiona’s green ensemble is the crop top. It shows a bit of skin, making her layers less frumpy. The knee high boot is also a popular, fashion-forward pairing.

2. Make it sporty

Worried that pencil skirts are too prim and girly for you? Well, think again. Thanks to normcore, androgynous dressing and athleisure, anything can work. Pairing your midi skirt with chunky sneakers or a baseball cap will allow your personality to shine through. A perfect finishing touch would be accessorising with edgy jewellery.

3. Go heavy on prints

Repeat after me: more is more. Printed skirts can have the grandma effect, but when paired with clashing prints and accessories, that same grandma skirt can turn into a statement piece. However, the trick is in the skilful juxtaposition of your items. Try adding bright pieces and slogan t-shirts to the outfit to balance the look.

4. Mini skirts

Mini skirts are a no-brainer because they are an all-time classic. This (length of) skirt is very easy to style and works for both winter and summer. But since we are moving towards summer, a cropped leather jacket and a crew neck top to layer, will keep you cool and comfy.

5. Unconventional materials

Silk skirts are a major summer trend and we love them for the sophistication they bring to many an outfit. This trend is perfect to wear to the office or on a night out with friends.
