On Saturday (Sunday morning for us) Beyoncé made history as the first ever woman of colour to headline Coachella (now dubbed Beychella), setting the Indio stage on fire with a two-hour performance we will never ever forget. Ever. She was not only joined on stage by approximately 100 backup dancers, a marching band, musicians and backup vocalists, but by her girls from Destiny’s Child, Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland, her sister Solange, as well as her husband Jay Z.
As the first black woman to headline Coachella, Bey used the opportunity to pay homage to black history icons Nina Simone and Malcolm X, black Greek heritage, and HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), which she works closely with through her BeyGood initiative’s Homecoming Scholars Award program.
From opening the show in full bejewelled Egyptian regalia and custom-made Balmain bodysuits, to breaking it down in several different pairs of high-heeled boots right down to a nail-polish-colour change mid-set, the world’s favourite triple threat reminded us why she’s the greatest to ever do it. B’s stylist Marni Senofonte and Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing worked tirelessly for months to put together the five outfits which shook Coachella to the core this past weekend. I was obviously stupefied by these dazzling ensembles, but I couldn’t help but be more intrigued by the boots she wore with her collegiate yellow-hoodie and denim-cut-off-shorts outfit.
I just had to find out where us mere mortals can purchase a similar pair of these iridescent fringed boots, or at least window shop head-turners like them.
Here’s how far my sleuthing got me:
While the above look was a custom-made Balmain one of course, the fringed boots are in fact, custom Christian Louboutins created only for the purpose of Bey’s Coachella performance. Unfortunately for us, we may not be able to get our hands on this unique footwear unless Christian Louboutin creates a limited edition inspired by Beychella. But the good news is that knee-length fringed, metallic or embellished boots are all the rage right now and we all deserve a pair.
So here are a few options you can shop locally:
Steve Madden ‘Crushing’ boots
A fitting name for the way I feel about these boots.
R3 600 at Steve Madden stores nationwide
Steve Madden ‘Alesandra’ boots
Same same, but different, right?
These are available online at Stevemadden.com
Zara glitter booties
Inspired by the Chanel AW17/18 boots sans the signature toe-cap.
Fatimah by DAILYFRIDAY boots
Okay, they’re ankle boots, but still.
R599 at Superbalist
Thank you to Beyoncé for showing us that boots aren’t actually made for walking. They’re made for dancing.
