‘Pack light’ are the echoing words of Erykah Badu’s soulful ballad ‘Bag Lady’, and we seem to be exactly doing that. In case you haven’t noticed, handbags have been shrinking. The tiny-handbag trend caters to a carefree lifestyle with an ‘essentials only’ mindset. Here are five unconventional bags that will add to your look and make sure you pack light:
1. The micro bag
Whether it’s around your waist, hanging from your neck, slung across your body or held tightly in your hand, this trend is all about size and shape. Firstly: the smaller, the trendier. The most exciting shapes, from sidewalk to runway, are rectangular, circular or box-shaped, and the bag usually has an envelope detail. Be warned: only your keys may be able to fit into these tiny bags, so wear pocketed clothing.
2. The beaded bag
This oldie is making a huge comeback. Monochrome or rainbow-like, the bubblegum-sized beads make up the entirety of the bag’s exterior. Reminiscent of the ’90s, this quaint bag is playful and practical.
3. The straw bag
This classic is no longer reserved for a seaside vacation. As a large tote, mini basket or geometrical cross-body bag, straw bags are great for spring/summer wardrobes. Whether it’s happy hour on a Friday, Saturday morning errands or the Sunday market, this accessory fits right in.
4. The hoop-handle bag
My theory is that the popularity of the top-handle bag influenced the shrinking of handbags in general. The top handle makes the bag look delicate and super cute, and it offers a modern touch to a classic shape.
5. The transparent plastic bag
I’m not sure what part of town you are taking this bag with you to, but when you find the spot, this deliberately simple bag is the perfect experimental accessory. I imagine colour-coordinating the contents of my bag or carefully curating what I actually need for the day, or carrying something I actually just want to showcase. It’s perfect for every season, is waterproof and is ultimately full of fun.
