When I joined Instagram, #OOTD (outfit of the day) was enthralling. People from all over the world shared their outfits, tagging where they acquired each item. As Instagram aesthetics have changed and personal feeds are all business, #OOTD posts that are about personal style and not promoting products are few and far in between.

However, the few accounts that still showcase personal style are one of my favourite things about my timeline. Here are 5 #OOTD posts that are super stylish, on trend and such great summer outfit ideas:

1. Mixing and matching shades and spots

It is easy to understand the appeal of Emma Jane Menteath’s Instagram page. The South African-born blogger and model shares snaps in dreamy tones of her travels, meals, art, decor and outfits. One of the most recent outfits on her feed is this lively layering of shades and spots.

Let’s start with the leopard-print items: the trucker denim jacket and the bucket hat. The style of the jacket is still a trending fit, and the bucket hat is definitely from this season. The fact that she paired leopard prints of different shades is another seasonal styling trend – mixing prints whether they match or not.

Considering that we are in the era of teeny tiny bags, her bag is decently sized. The small handles that force you to carry it by hand are still in for the season, and the marigold satin adds a pop of colour. So does the yellow of her happy socks and her yellow-tinted lenses.

The loose-fit of the overalls and her sneakers give the look an athletic feel, and her rosy turtleneck is reminiscent of millennial pink. Emma Jane’s layering and use of prints and colour maximise the bold character of this look and the attention it deserves.

2. Smart casual

I have spent significant amounts of time wondering what ‘smart casual’ is supposed to look like. Whenever I arrive at functions with this dress code, the scale is never truly balanced. Guests are either too smart or too casual.  I reckon that this Shelley Mokoena outfit manifests the right balance. The fashion entrepreneur’s Instagram page is predominately about her outfits and items.

The black on black on black with a pop of white, golden statement earrings and bold sunglasses is a winning combination. The most interesting part is how Shelley paired her ‘summer suit’ with a pair of thick black slides.

3. The utility jumpsuit

Sarah Langa Mackay is always on trend and shares her looks in almost every frame of her Instagram page.

The utility jumpsuit has been around for the past two seasons, but it is still the perfect item to experiment with. I love this look because of how she styled it. It has a safari feel with the khaki jumpsuit and the chocolate brown additions, especially the tiny Louis Vuitton backpack. The way the belt cinches her waist adds a feminine feel to the loose-fitting jumpsuit. And the statement earrings are a sure seasonal trend and flattering piece of jewellery for this look.

4. Tropical prints

Retired fashion editor Palesa Mahlaba mostly promotes products and her personal style on her Instagram page. In a recent post she is wearing a shirt and pants tailored in the same tropical material. The outfit is complemented with a pair of yellow accessories – Gen Z yellow is a seasonal colour and the ’80s-inspired earrings and belt bag in particular, are trending accessories.

The tropical print trend is an ’80s comeback and Palesa gives it a definite luxe feel. This outfit is vibrant, refreshing and makes me want to kiss minimal monochrome looks goodbye for a while.

5. Snakeskin

Disclaimer: I am absolutely biased when it comes to Ada Oguntodu. Her style is everything and then some. I am enamoured of her Instagram page and I could not compile this list without her.

The fashion, beauty and lifestyle blogger’s style is super fun, feminine, bold and trendy. In this look she is wearing this season’s hottest trend. The colour of her dress, burnt orange, is a summery, seasonal colour, and it’s worn with knee-high boots. Ada’s outfit is bold, pairing a trendy colour and print. This look sparks inspiration for so many other possible combinations.

Hopefully these five looks have left you inspired to add something new to your wardrobe, or to style an outfit differently. Perhaps you’ve been prompted to share your own OOTDs and become the reason others get inspired. Simply put: this seasonal change creates so many fashionable opportunities, so don’t be shy to try them out or create your own.
