Before you get scared off by the title, with visions of early 2000 camo-style trousers flooding your brain, hear us out.
Khaki trousers are a good thing. Just to clarify: we’re not talking about safari suits or those god-awful trousers that had a zip around the knee to allow them to transform into shorts. *shudders* We’re talking about well-tailored trousers in light brown, olive green or sand. These trousers fit perfectly into one of the biggest trends for 2017: military. And, if styled correctly, they can become one of the most versatile pieces in your wardrobe. Just look to the street style stars of fashion weeks in London, Milan, Paris and New York for some inspiration on how to style (and rock) them.
Look out for slim-fit trousers with a few key details, and avoid baggy over-sized pairs with lots of pockets, zips or things on which you could attach, say, a compass or water bottle. (Rule of thumb: if you could see yourself wearing a pair to a Scout’s meeting or army training base, they’re probably not the right pants.)
Here are a few of the hottest khaki trousers (never thought we’d say that either) and why.
This pair is super basic, and the ideal place to start with for this trend. Pair with a striped T-shirt and sneakers.
These slightly boxier fit trousers work as they have no other major details, except for a turn-up which elevates the pants. Try this with a ribbed knit tucked in, and a pair of ankle boots.
The skinny cut of these khakis means that the zip details don’t become too overwhelming. They’d look great with a pair of low, block heels and a silk shirt.
Not only are these trousers tailored to perfection, they also have a great tortoiseshell belt. A lace cami would complement them perfectly.
However, if you’re after a more laid-back look, this Topshop pair is perfect. Just make sure you don’t wear a boxy top, as the trousers are already boxy.
Halfway between formal and casual, you can dress these up or down. And thanks to the cropped leg, they’ll be gorgeous with a pair of heels.
Probably the closest thing to actual army trousers, this pair hits the military trend spot on. Wear with soft, feminine pieces (such as a pleated blouse) to juxtapose the look.
