We’ve come to associate the iconic crocodile logo with the Lacoste brand, but most people don’t understand the association between sports and this ferocious reptile. Here’s a bit of history. The brand’s founder, René Lacoste, who became known as ‘the Crocodile,’ was ranked the number one tennis player in the world in 1926 and 1927.
There are a number of different stories that explain why Lacoste was given the nickname, ‘The Crocodile.’ One of these stories is that in 1927, René made a bet with team captain Pierre Gillou who promised him a crocodile-skin suitcase if he won his game. Lacoste lost the game but the association stuck and soon after, the American press wrote headlines about this champion player, calling him the ‘Crocodile.’
Today, Lacoste is as iconic as it’s always been both on the court and on the runway. There’s also a new crocodile in town. Twelve-time Grand Slam title-winner, Novak Djokovic is Lacoste’s latest brand ambassador. His utilitarian, contemporary style is the inspiration behind Lacoste’s sports pieces, casual clothing and eyewear.
