South Africa’s Sumbandila Scholarship Trust will be joining the Cash & Rocket Tour, a fresh take on fundraising by touring through Europe in supercars. Starting on 5 June in Venice, taking in Geneva and Paris and ending in London on 8 June, the tour aims to raise awareness and funds for women and children in need. Some 70 famous and glamorous women, including Maria Grazia (Creative Director of Valentino) and Fanca Sozzani (Editor-in-Chief Italian Vogue) will be taking part. Luxury brands such as Valentino, Veuve Cliquot, Net-a-Porter and Julien Macdonald are partnering or sponsoring the initiative through events and auctions. The idea is to overcome ‘donor fatigue’.

The Sumbandila Scholarship Trust is based in Limpopo and offers secondary education scholarships to disadvantaged rural children and also offers an Educational Outreach Programme. The Trust’s mission is to provide deprived children with a high quality secondary education alongside a strong mentorship programme, nurturing both leadership potential and entrepreneurial skills while encouraging social responsibility and awareness. 2013 was the first year that founder and executive director of Sumbandila Leigh Bristow took part in Cash and Rocket, raising substantial funds.

‘Cash & Rocket is so much more than just another charity event,’ says Bristow. ‘Through it we not only raised money and awareness for our project but it sparked our children’s imaginations; and seeing their flag flying in some of the oldest cities in the world made them believe that anything is possible and gave them something magical to aspire to.’
