We’re waiting in anticipation for the 23rd South African Music Awards (SAMAs). Over the last few weeks there’s been plenty of news, hype, and gossip to leave us counting down the days till 27 May. This week we found out who the hosts will be, and that two honorary awards will be presented to two incredible women. Recognising the impact they have made on the global and local music industries, the SAMAs will present the International Achiever Awards to Pretty Yende and the Lifetime Achiever Award to Rebecca Malope. These are two women you have to watch at the SAMAs this year.
Recognising the incredible contribution she’s made on a global scale, this year the SAMAs will honour the soprano Pretty Yende with the International Achiever Award. So just what has Pretty been getting up to overseas? She has sung in some of the most famous opera houses in the world, with the world press lauding the quality of her voice; she’s appeared on The Late Show and The Wendy William’s Show; and has shared the stage with the likes of Andrea Bocelli. Watch her incredible performance on The Wendy Williams Show below.
For many of us growing up in South Africa, the weekend wasn’t complete without seeing Rebecca Malope singing gospel on TV. Incredibly, the Queen of Gospel has sold over 10 million copies of her 36 albums. She has a career that most musicians only dream of and has established herself as the master of her genre. So it makes sense that this legend will be presented with the Lifetime Achiever Award.
Pretty and Rebecca are just two of the remarkable women at the SAMAs this year. Have a look at our series Women To Watch, to find out who else is making waves this year. Keep an eye out for the SAMAs which will be broadcasted live on SABC 1 on 27 May at 8pm.
