Hlomela Bucwa made headlines late last year after she was sworn into Parliament, taking over the title of youngest Member of Parliament (MP) from Yusuf Cassim.
The former Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Student Representative Council member and LLB student said at the time, ‘I feel very privileged to be here and am also excited to be taking the voice of my constituency – young people – to a national platform.’ And that’s what she has done.
The 24-year-old made headlines again after she delivered her maiden parliamentary speech on government’s failure to improve the lives of young South Africans. Focusing on how NFSAS and the older generation have failed the youth, while delivering her six-minute speech, Hlomela embodied the voice of so many of her peers who are struggling to find work and further their education. ‘Let us tread softly because we tread on the dreams of a lost generation’, she concluded.
Whatever your political views (Hlomela is a DA MP), we bet her moving speech will give you chills from start to finish. Watch it here:
Immediately after her speech, South Africans showed love to the young politician on Twitter.
