Sex tapes are hot. We know this. There’s a particular pleasure in reviewing your very best bedroom moments from your phone; yet another reason we are thankful to be living in the era of mobile technology. But once your private moments are captured in pixels, it’s all too easy for them to be shared without your consent online, go viral, and within minutes make you the new lady in the streets who’s a freak in the sheets.

Revenge porn is technically just non-consensual porn – sharing explicit images or video of someone online without their permission, for whatever reason. It could be the result of a hack – as in the case of the 2014 ‘Fappening’ hack which affected Jennifer Lawrence, Kirsten Dunst, and Kate Upton, among others. Or it could be done for revenge by an intimate partner you’ve ended things with – imagine your sex tape popping up in your news feed, shared by people you know, while you frantically try to report each share to Facebook.

But a new app, Rumuki, is here to stop that from happening. The name comes from the Japanese term for ‘room key’, developer Nathan Kot told Broadly. Like a hotel room, the only people with access are the two with the keys. The video is encrypted with two keys stored on separate devices. No-one can watch the video without permission from the other device. Because each device only has one key, if either one deletes the video the other cannot access it. The video is also never stored on Rumuki’s servers or sent across the internet – so it can’t be hacked. Rumuki is also completely anonymous – you don’t have to sign up with an email or social account – nifty!

Although Rumuki is definitely a step forward in preventing videos from being shared, there will always be analog workarounds. If your partner is really set on sharing the video, they can record it with another device, or snap screenshots. While Rumuki is being updated and will soon notify you if screenshots are taken, there’s no way to prevent a secondary recording, so don’t be lured into a total sense of security.
