Can you believe we are approaching the end of the year?(!) This is the third-to-last 2017 issue of Marie Claire, and marks my ninth ’10 reasons why’ post this year. When you think about it, it seems impossible how fast time has gone, but it has, and continue we must. So I have summed up my 10 personal favourites from this month’s issue; it was tough because every single feature is worth an in-depth read, all the fashion is totally covetable, and the beauty pages give you all the tips you could possibly need for this time of the year. So here it goes…

Because who doesn’t love Emma Stone?

She had me at Easy A. And since then our October cover star has gone on to headline some of Hollywood’s most prestigious films, including the upcoming Battle of the Sexes in which she plays the famous tennis feminist Billie Jean King. We can’t wait. But it only arrives on SA shores at the end of November so until then, read Emma being interviewed by co-star (and funny lady) Sarah Silverman.

Because fashion always means something

One of the biggest trends for most of this year – fashion with a say. We’ve put together our favourite items that not only talk the talk, but are also bound to spark conversation wherever you might be heading.

Because pigmentation is a pain in the ass

This bothersome issue can be combatted with the right products and correct beauty regime. Luckily our beauty girls are on it and are happy to share their wisdom with the rest of us.

Because we will always celebrate independent women

The nomadic women of Nepal have partners or husbands who are often away for lengthly periods, fighting battles. So these independent women have learned to hunt, ride horseback, shoot and kill to carry on living, all the while bringing up their children in the harsh Nepalese wilderness.

Because we are open to learning about the non-conventional

Are you married or in a committed relationship? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to open this relationship to dating other people outside of it? Well this couple has, and did it quite successfully.

Because women are strong

Edwain Steenkamp interviews Madiba’s granddaughter Zoleka Mandela. She opens up about her past addiction, the loss of her children, her struggle with abuse and surviving cancer – after which she has come to terms with her inner strength and blossomed into a more confidant woman.

Because we get a thrill from frills

Fashion assistant Danielle Viljoen has put together a beautiful fashion editorial complete with all the frills and ruffles you could possibly need. From shirts and skirts to jackets and dresses, use this as your guide to nail this trend.

Because we all love to smell extraordinary

Marie Claire has ranked the world’s best perfumes, narrowing the expansive list down to five winners in the following categories: best women’s fragrance, best women’s fragrance bottle, best innovation and creativity, best men’s fragrance, and Marie Claire UK jury prize 2017. I’m not going to tell you the winners – you’re going to have to read to find out.

Because we celebrate every curve of every women – natural or not

Research shows that breast augmentation resulting in busty, Pamela Anderson-type breasts has dwindled since its peak in the noughties. But why? Well, I uncover some of the possible reasons, interview South Africa’s top cosmetic surgeons for their opinions on the matter, and come to some kind of conclusion.

Because we love to travel Africa

Lynette Botha shares her journey to beautiful Botswana – not only one of the world’s most sought-after destinations but also right over our border and one of our closest neighbours. There she reconnects with nature and leaves the real world behind – something we all need to do a little more often. And here’s your chance: enter and you could win a trip for two to Tuskers Bush Camp and Xobega Island Camp, with Sun Destinations and Airlink. Details inside the mag.
