Former DA leader and current Western Cape Premier Helen Zille has once again come under fire for her problematic tweets, this time for her posts in defence of colonialism. ‘For those claiming legacy of colonialism was ONLY negative, think of our independent judiciary, transport infrastructure, piped water etc,’ she said on Thursday morning, after a series of tweets comparing Singapore and South Africa (one even mentions the ‘valuable aspects of [Singapore’s] colonial history’).

Helen received backlash from the public, the media and within the DA. Party leader Mmusi Maimane was silent at first but later condemned her tweet.

The premier later apologised on the social network, but her party did not take her comments lightly. ‘It has been referred to a disciplinary process. I have come out as a South African and condemned it. The wording is indefensible,’ Mmusi said on talk radio station 702.
