This year’s International Emmy Awards celebrated talent from all over the world, including a South African actor who appeared on the red carpet for a nomination. The 46th annual event took place at the Hilton in New York last night.

The hosting comedian Hari Kondabolu, known for the documentary The Problem with Apu, joked that: ‘There are no real losers here because you all made it through immigration’ – according to Variety.

Channel24 reports that South African actor Thuso Mbedu was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress for her role in Is’thunzi (Mzansi Magic) – Germany’s Anna Schudt ended up winning this award. Thuso looked incredible on the red carpet in a dress designed by Kentse Masilo (Project Runner SA winner):

The actress posted on social media that she’s never been happier and had this to say to the African artist:

‘African artist: the world is your oyster. Keep pushing, keep fighting for your passion. I dare you to be the first POC to fetch that award.’
