Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, was crowned Miss Universe 2017 on Sunday in Las Vegas, beating 91 other contestants to take the crown. Behind her were Colombia’s Laura Gonzalez as first princess, and Jamaica’s Davina Bennett as second princess.

During the contest, the model shared the story of a car-jacking she experienced a month after she was crowned Miss South Africa. She’s since being running self-defence programmes for young women back home. Watch her speak about emotional and physical empowerment:
