Pretoria High School for Girls has come under fire for telling black students that afros and other natural hairstyles are not allowed because they’re ‘untidy’.

One student was reportedly prevented from writing exams because her hair was ‘spiky’ and ‘unkempt’. The girls say that they’ve experienced this kind of discrimination for years, and are also not allowed to speak in their mother tongue languages while at school.

The discriminatory rules have led to a protest by some of the students at the school this morning, where police were called and allegedly threatened to arrest the girls.

Police arrived at the school with dogs and armed with guns.

A small group of parents and former students have gathered in protest outside the school, and students from the University of Pretoria are expected to join later today.
