Girlgaze is a multimedia project that challenges the norms of the visual media industry and creates a platform for talented female photographers and filmmakers to showcase their work. This initiative comes at a time when the industry is still lacking diversity and has, to date, given very little room for female talent to be nurtured and promoted.
In their own words, ‘We are telling stories and creating images by taking the camera into our hands to express our viewpoints, reflect our states of mind, share our interests – whether in politics, fashion, tech, beauty, business – and to show the world how we see it. For a woman breaking into the photography industry, the obstacles are unquestionably hard. Our mission is to support girls behind the camera.’
Girlgaze has evolved and gained momentum since its inception, and now has exciting initiatives lined up. One of these is the #newview film competition, in which the Girlgaze founders along with an incredible panel of judges will review film submissions from ordinary women who aspire to enter the industry. Some of these judges include Zendaya, Jada Pinkett Smith, Tracee Ellis Ross and Rashida Jones.
In a beautifully curated Instagram page, Girlgaze creates a world as seen by women. Each image is a different contributor who adds her own visual story to the collective. Some reflect on experience, others share their aesthetic; but each one contributes in an impactful way. The page is a visual celebration of female talent and home to some of the most beautiful photography and visual art out there.
