You can never say you’ve done The Drakensberg – from the central parts to the Southern and Northern Drakensberg Mountains and in between there’s so much to do and see. I myself have visited a number of times – and each time to a different place. This past weekend was no exception. Alpine Heath Resort is nestled in the northern parts of the mountains, about 45km from Bergville comprising 100 chalets dotted about the property. Each chalet has three bedrooms and sleeps 6 quite comfortably – one main double bedroom ensuite and two with twin beds and a separate bathroom to share. Also nice is that there’s a fully-equipped kitchen so you can do your own catering for all meals or choose to eat at the restaurant for breakfast and dinner. So for 6-people per chalet, pay R490 per person per night for self catering or R630 for breakfast and dinner.
Yes – these four burgers are just a taste of what one dish looks like in terms of food offering. As you can see, you won’t starve. The portions are ridiculously generous! I felt so bad leaving the other three burgers behind but really, if I was to feel any sort of guilt-free relaxing (even if my stomach would allow it) I had to.
As far as entertainment goes, there’s plenty to do – from swimming, hiking, horse riding, picnicking, mountain biking and trying out some adventure activities at a camp round the bend and down the road (I’ll tell you a little more about that in a later post). And with the conference halls, bomas, and gorgeous backdrop of the mountains and dam, it’s perfect for those long weekend weddings… And if there’s anything you’d like to get on with without the kids – you can call on babysitting services to look after the little ones either in your chalet or out and about the resort. Our little one thoroughly enjoyed the Kids only lounge which had everything from balls to crayons, paints and toys galore.
We’re already planning a family getaway either in July or November… Our guest relations liaison Richard tells us these are the best times to visit – when the resort is not so busy, and the mountains are capped with snow or bright green and lush. For more info call 031 310 3333.
