Snapchat is a lot of things: At times it borders the banal, sometimes it’s informative, other times it’s creative, and often it’s a space for endless voyeurism and exhibition.
‘What is the point of Snapchat?’ This question has been asked by those who use the video and image sharing app, and those who’ve never laid eyes on it. The answer, I admit, is sometimes, ‘I have no idea’. But what we do know is it is one of the fastest growing apps out there. Since launching five years ago, what started out as an image-sharing platform has gradually changed its functions to include broadcasts from publications such as BuzzFeed, CNN and Refinery29, as well events like SXSW and the many fashion weeks.
Today it’s the home to an estimated 100-million active daily users – from celebrities like Solange Knowles, Nomuzi Mabena and Rihanna, to the regular Joe’s – who give users a glimpse into their lives (like they’re living a Truman Show type of reality), or make it their own artistic or educational platform.
With that said, Marie Claire’s online editor Michelle Hatting and I have rounded up some local snappers we’re crazy about.
