The one thing that you can be damn sure everyone on earth has in common is a mother. Everyone was raised by someone; and while that may sound obvious it’s pretty astonishing when you think about it. That applies in the literal sense of everyone being born, but also in the sense of mothering being the act of bothering enough about you to bring you up.

It’s Mother’s Day on 14 May, and beyond the cheese (we’re looking at you – new moms on Facebook), mothering is a remarkable act. What is motherhood? Simply put, it’s unconditional love in it’s purest form – and maybe the occasional snotklap. It’s the irrational and insistent belief that you are the best-looking baby/smartest kid in class/most talented person in the entire company. It’s giving things up – from sleep and food, to time alone and money – that could have been spent on fun stuff, or your career. Motherhood comes in many shapes and forms: biological mothers, but also sisters, aunties, grandmothers, family friends and neighbours.

The greatest gift that we receive from our various mothers is our sense of self. In the words of English paediatrician Donald Winnicott, ‘If this contribution is accepted, it follows that every man or woman who is sane, every man or woman who has the feeling of being a person in the world, and for whom the world means something, every happy person, is in infinite debt to a woman.’

So yup: shout-out to mothers and motherhood, whether biological, adopted, surrogate, or that someone who brought you up. If you’re looking for a way to say ‘thank you’ or ‘I love you’ or ‘I would literally not exist without you’ this Mother’s Day, try something your mother wouldn’t get for herself, that seems a little indulgent. We’re talking about a lush value-pack of three glossy magazines for R70. Between Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire and Good Housekeeping, she’ll be entertained, inspired, informed, and thoroughly treated. The pack comes with a NetFlorist voucher that she can use to pick something she likes – perfect.
