Former supermodel Christy Turlington Burns has appealed to mothers across the world to forego their cards and brunches in solidarity with children who never get to celebrate the day.

She’s encouraging mothers to “disappear” by choosing not to celebrate the day, take calls or even update their Facebook statuses. The founder of the Every Mother Counts Foundation for  maternal health hopes to call attention to the problem of maternal mortality by declaring this Sunday “No Mother’s Day.”

Mother’s Day is said to be worth around $18.6 billion this year, and Christy also hopes that those who observe No Mother’s Day will “cut through the noise” and remember what’s important. It’s not as extreme as an economic protest, she says, just an opportunity for mothers to band together in solidarity and support of others.
