Tumblr, the micro-blogging platform that is particularly popular amongst teens, has now taken steps to ban sharing of information and media that they believe is harmful. This includes pro-ana blogs that motivate girls to maintain eating disorders through pictures and encouraging words. They’ll also be taking down and banning posts that promote self-mutilation and suicide. Users who search for these terms will be directed to a PSA detailing where they can get help.
The policy kicks in as of this week. It’ would be interesting to hear how Tumblr will enforce this new policy, considering that Tumblr posts are blogged and re-blogged at the speed of lightning. Do you think this measure will make any difference in reducing the number of negative messages that users are exposed to? Or is it an infringement on users’ rights to artistic freedom and expression?
