It’s no secret that we live in a world where women feel pressured to have the ‘perfect’ body – a definition that changes almost daily. It’s hard to overcome body insecurities and celebrities have the added disadvantage of being subjected to harsh public criticism about their looks. While most choose not to respond to their haters, these famous ladies told them exactly what they (and we) think about body shaming of any kind.
When a tabloid published a photo of her in a swimsuit, captioned ‘Thigh-ra Banks’, Tyra wore the exact same swimsuit on her TV show as evidence that they had taken it at a bad angle. But to her haters, she said, ‘I have one thing to say to you: kiss my fat ass!’
Kristen Bell received criticism about her weight when she fell pregnant and responded perfectly: ‘I am not a woman whose self-worth comes from her dress size.’
When Jennifer Lawrence started acting professionally, agents told her she wouldn’t be hired if she didn’t lose weight, and that she should use pictures of herself as weight loss motivation. She responded, ‘If anybody even tries to whisper the word “diet”, I’m like, “You can go fuck yourself.”‘
Despite her enviable curves, Kim Kardashian had a lot of trouble with fat-shaming while pregnant with 2-year-old North West. After she gave birth she took to Twitter to confront her haters: ‘Making fun of me pregnant and making fun of me trying to lose weight now. Shame on you. I’m not perfect and I will never conform to your skinny standards. Sorry! Don’t give young girls a complex.’
Instagram users were critical of Lady Gaga when she posted this photo. She replied to them saying, ‘So what if I got a belly sometimes, sometimes I don’t. There’s people starving in the world. I’d rather be fat than be shallow.’
Empire‘s Gabourey Sidibe attended the Golden Globes while she was part of the American Horror Story cast. When the red carpet pictures of her were published, people were commenting on her weight on social media. She responded on Twitter: ‘To people making mean comments about my GG pics, I mos def cried about it on that private jet on my way to my dream job last night. #JK.’
Zooey Deschanel had the perfect response to her body critics: ‘Summer Menu: 1. Full fat dairy. 2. Carbs. 3. Wine. Enjoy’
Iggy Azalea shut down social media users, especially female ones, who were making fun of pictures of her at the airport without make-up on, saying, ‘If you’re a woman trying to make me feel bad for pictures of myself with no make up… F you!’
