Another year has come and gone, and with it plenty of wellness trends. Some have been good, such as poke bowls, which I will be eating for the rest of my life. Others, like putting turmeric in smoothies, not so much. People in the health and fitness world are always coming up with new and potentially better ways to keep our minds and bodies in tip-top shape. Here is what is expected to take off in a big way in 2018.
Follow your horoscope religiously? You might not be for long because it’s about to become all about moon cycles. Recently someone told me they couldn’t sign a contract until Mercury was no longer in retrograde (not because people born under the sign of Cancer were going to be experiencing bad luck). Expect to hear a lot more people worrying about what the planets are up to as opposed to the stars.
Strength, not size
For years many of us were stuck on the idea that being slender was the only way to be healthy. We have finally moved on from that potentially dangerous, and frankly depressing, way of thinking, and have come to realise that being thin is not the be all and end all. Strength training, rather than weight-loss training, is going to be the new focus in the fitness world.
Bananas, apples, oranges – been there, eaten that. Exotic fruit is going to be where it’s at for 2018. Many fruits and veggies from other countries, such as cassava and jackfruit, are much-loved by people who lead a plant-based, or at least plant-heavy, diet, as they are high in all sorts of vitamins that make for a healthy body. They might be difficult to access for now, but we are sure that they will make their way into mainstream supermarkets soon.
Clean eating is all well and good, but there is so much pollution in the air around us that just breathing can counteract our efforts. Google searches have indicated that there is going to be a focus on clean air in 2018. This won’t just be limited to putting air purifying machines in every room of the house, but also surrounding ourselves with more plants, which are great at filtering the air around us. And more greenery never hurt anyone.
Both Lucy and Renee are HUGE fans of indoor plants and have a decent collection in each home. Why? Aside from adding colour and beauty to your home, indoor plants help to filter the air and bring a little of the outside world inside, which is sometimes the only time we get close to nature We were so excited when our friends @dearboni launched their plant delivery service, and have already gifted several clients (and ourselves!) a plant or two. We think house plants are the ultimate gift, and perfect for Christmas presents. If you live in Melbourne, do check them out, you won’t be able to resist buying a plant, they’re gorgeous! 📷: @dearboni
While we may not have realised it until recent years, it makes perfect sense that our gut plays a massive role in our general well-being. This discovery has lead to a rising interested in how to keep our digestive systems healthy. It not only affects how we feel in that area, but can also impact our mental health and appearance as well. Who would’ve thought? Gwyneth Paltrow, that’s who. Less sugar and more probiotics for the win!
Love your locks
The health of our hair isn’t something that is just limited to the beauty sector. More and more people are looking for ways to improve its condition and strength rather than just focusing on how to make it look good. And since healthy hair looks better, it’s a win-win. From nourishing DIY masks to going natural, women are wanting to learn how to treat their crowning glories better so that they will be rewarded with luscious locks in 2018.
Why on earth would you have a cup of plain ol’ OJ when you can add things to it to make it even better? And we’re not talking about the flavour as much as we are the health benefits. Drinks such as kombucha and juices that contain ingredients like activated charcoal are massive in the wellness industry and this trend is showing no signs of slowing down. Because what’s better than a tasty drink? A tasty drink that’s good for you, that’s what!
‘C’ you later
For a long time vitamin C has been known to boost our immunity and keep bugs at bay. More recently we have learnt that it is also important for the production of collagen, which is what keeps us looking young and radiant. While getting enough of the inside is important, applying it topically is also increasing in popularity, and vitamin C-infused skincare is going to become more and more mainstream in the upcoming year.
We know that essential oils can be really beneficial, both to our skin and our minds. How else is one supposed to achieve a state of Zen? In recent months, more people have been searching for ways to incorporate these scented oils into their food. You read that right. Apparently they can be just as beneficial on the inside as they are on the outside. And a shot of peppermint oil in hot water can sort out indigestion chop chop!
Holiday at home
Self-care is something that is becoming more of a priority for a lot of people. And it’s about time, too! Planning a holiday might be fun but it can also be just as, if not more, exhausting than work. Which defeats the point if your aim is to relax as much as possible. Enter the staycation. Staycations are becoming more popular and more common, and are set to become the new normal in 2018. Because why not spend your off time surrounded by your creature comforts? We can’t think of anything better. Bliss!
